Rating: - Toasts 2 or 4 slices fine, burns 1 or 3 slices
This toaster works ok, but not nearly as well as I had hoped. You can toast either 2 or 4 slices quite well, but if you try to toast a single slice or 3 slices, the slice that is by itself always ends up burnt. Kitchen Aid would have done much better by making this toaster with four individual slots, rather than 2 long slots. A single slice of toast just can't take all the heat that the long slot puts out. Also, you always have to turn down the heat for subsequent batches by at least 1 notch, even though KitchenAid claims you will not have to. I did time it, and subsequent batches are shorter, as they are supposed to be, but the toast still gets burnt if you don't turn it down. Tried the frozen function with bread and it worked fine. Haven't tried bagels yet.

I felt compelled to write after reading these recent reviews, if only to protect my lovely toaster from such vicious slander. I have found this to be a beautiful and very effective toaster. I splurged for a toaster wide enough to fit bagels and long enough to enjoy sliced baguettes (Semifreddi seeded with cream cheese are my passion). This toaster has worked consistently for the past ten months now. Perhaps I'm not the degree of toast connoisseur that some of these people are, but mine browns well, and the above-mentioned features have made it indispensable to me. Most importantly, the glossy red color makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I know, however, that individual responses to color may vary:)

Rating: - True to Kitchenaid quality
I just had to disagree with some of the other reviewers . Maybe their machines are defective but mine works like a charm . It was a Christmas gift that we use every day . We toast bagels almost every morning , toast bread ( any combination from 1-4) , defrost frozen bread slices and warm bread and buns . We have absolutely no complaints !! We think this toaster is the simply the "cat's meow " .
