Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Love this freezer!
I love this freezer. I wish I had a bigger one, but for just my husband and myself it is great. You could actually serve 4 people very easily. I used one of the recipes in the book, and added a fresh ripe banana and it was great. The first time I put it in the freezer, I laid it on it's side and it wouldn't freeze the ice cream. I sat it upright after that in the freezer and have had no more problems. Clean up is a breeze, and it freezes every bit as well as my electric freezer. It is so easy. When I wash it, I just store it right back in the freezer and it is always ready to go for the next batch. It takes about 30 minutes to make a batch and I just stir it once or twice every three or four minutes. Nothing to it!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - You'll Never Need a Bulky Electric Ice Cream Maker!
When I received my 1st Donvier as a gift 11 years ago, I was very skeptical. I soon became a convert... it's amazingly easy to use, and both of my sons have been helping make ice cream with it since they were each 3 years old. You simply keep the canister in the freezer section, and when you are ready to make ice cream, put it into the case, pop on the blades, lid, and crank, and turn! You do need to turn every couple of minutes, as it clearly states in the instructions, to keep the ingredients from sticking and freezing before it's completely blended, but that's part of the fun: passing the Donvier around the room and each member of the family adding ingredients (chips, nuts, granola, chopped fruit), turning the crank a little, then passing it on. Ready in just minutes! And clean up is easy -- rinse it clean and pop it back in the freezer until next time. I have never had a problem with ingredients freezing before I want them (unlike another reviewer, who I guess didn't read the instructions!), and it doesn't require electricity... which means you don't have to yield precious counter space to fit a large, bulky electric ice cream maker. I mentioned that this is my first... we also bought the larger capacity Donvier, so I have one for when I'm in the mood for a frozen lemonade slush, and one when the whole family wants dessert. A great buy!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - We all scream...
I bought this with the Ben and Jerry's book- what a great gift idea! The machine itself is very durable and sturdy. I bought this model over an electric one because A) I didn't want to deal with the noise of an electric model and B) it's really not that tough to turn the crank every couple of minutes for a half hour (usually only 20 minutes). It's quite relaxing and it makes the end result much more satisfying.

The ice cream only gets soft-frozen, but if you throw the finished batch in the freezer for a few hours, it gets hard- frozen. Word of warning: when I first got this, it would barley fit into my studio apartment mini-freezer and I couldn't get anything to get anything but slushy. I since have moved and have a full-sized freezer and it freezes just fine now. It's not very big, but it's not practical unless you have a full sized freezer.
